Alumni Spotlight: Jim Beran - Class of 1972
Alumni Spotlight: Jim Beran - Class of 1972

In 1965 my family moved to Cleveland when my father was transferred from San Antonio working for what was then Ernst & Ernst (Now EY). We lived in Shaker Heights and I attended the Shaker School system through 9th Grade. Looking for a smaller and similar environment to the Lutheran Elementary School I had attended in Texas, I transferred to Lutheran East beginning in 10th grade. I participated in sports receiving letters in Football, Wrestling and Golf (all of which I was mediocre at) my senior year.

The day after graduation in 1972 I moved to Los Angeles with my family, my father once again having moved to Los Angeles several months prior still with what was by then Ernst & Whiney. I attended UCLA and upon graduation worked on a campaign for Mike Curb who would become Lt. Governor of California. I was his Deputy Chief of Staff until he was defeated running for Governor. In 1985 I joined the Reagan administration and held several positions in the administration which carried over for a short period into the George H.W. Bush administration.

I returned to California in 1989 and became a serial entrepreneur, owning different businesses and was involved in projects both in the US and overseas which I’m still involved with today. My two latest projects are this book about my father, and a screen play about Washington DC. Regarding the book, although every father should be every boy’s hero, I have had the opportunity in life to meet many great people, and I can say unequivocally that even if he had not been my father, he would have been the greatest person I ever met in life. It was a story worth telling and although there is no way to capture the character, scope and many facets of the man, the book by telling his story, imparts many life lessons and as my father would have said, “it is something that should be looked over and not overlooked”.

My screenplay is a comedy spurred by experiences and relationships I had while working in Washington DC. I have a famous writer I’m working with, Bennet Tramer, who was the co-creator of the famous TV show in the 90’s “Saved by the Bell”.
