Mastery Mathematics

Description: Mastery math is a scaffolded class to help students who are struggling with number sense and covers concepts starting with addition, subtraction and multiplication of multi-digit numbers as stand alone problems and in word problems. We cover fractional multiplication and division to prepare students for the use of fractions in more advanced math classes. Percentages are explored as part of a whole, interest, commissions, sales tax, tip and discounts. We explore percent of change as it will relate to interpreting change in a variable over time as it applies to science. We explore geometry of perimeter, area, volume and classification of shapes.

Linear Algebra

Description: Linear Algebra is the study of equations and functions of the first degree. The course begins with real numbers and then moves on to solving multistep equations and inequalities. Functions and function notation are introduced and the concepts of domain and range are connected to independent variables and dependent variables. Real-world applications are emphasized throughout the course content along with the Ohio Standards for Mathematical Practice.        

Algebra

Description: This course covers a variety of topics including: work with integers, data analysis, linear equations and inequalities, linear functions and graphs, systems of equations and inequalities, polynomials, exponents, factoring, quadratic equations, radical expressions and equations, and rational expressions and equations. Emphasis is placed on application of algebraic skills and problem solving. 

Honors Algebra

Prerequisite: Completion of 8th grade mathematics with at least a “B” average.                

Description: Honors Algebra 1 is in the progression to help receive the required credits for graduation, as well as receive admission to college. Topics covered include sets, real number systems, variables and algebraic expressions, solving and graphing linear equations and inequalities, polynomials, factoring, rational expressions, application problems, solving quadratic equations, and problem solving.

Geometry

Prerequisite: Completion of Algebra I Part 2        

Description: Geometry is in the progression to help receive the required credits for graduation, as well as receive admission to college. Stressing proofs in geometry, this course is formal in nature treating the following topics: geometry as a system of mathematics, segments, angles, triangles and other polygons, parallel lines, similarity, circles, area and additional topics as time permits.

Honors Geometry

Prerequisite: Completion of Honors Algebra I with at least a “B” average.            

Description: This course will cover the following topics: the foundations of geometry, basic constructions and transformations, reasoning, logic and proof, parallel and perpendicular lines and angle relationships, triangle congruence and similarity, trigonometry, measurement of polygons, circles and solids. Problem solving and critical thinking skills will be emphasized throughout the course.                 

Algebra II/Trigonometry

Prerequisite: Completion of Geometry

Description: Algebra 2 is in the progression to help receive the required credits for graduation, as well as receive admission to college. Algebra 2 will develop advanced algebra skills started in Algebra 1. Topics covered include, but are not limited to: solving linear, quadratic, polynomial, radical, rational, trigonometric and logarithmic equations, imaginary and complex numbers.

Honors Algebra II/Trigonometry

Prerequisite: Completion of Honors Geometry with at least a “B” average.

Description: This course will begin with an overview of basic Algebra I and properties of real numbers. Topics covered during the year include solving linear and quadratic equations and inequalities, systems of equations, polynomials and factoring, exponents and radicals, rational expressions and equations. Graphing will be explored including linear, quadratic, absolute value and polynomial functions. An introduction to exponential, logarithmic and trigonometric functions will include both mathematical and graphical approaches. Problem solving skills, real world applications, graphing calculator use, and critical thinking skills will be emphasized throughout the course. A notebook and graph paper are required. A scientific calculator is required

Honors Pre-Calculus

Semester: 2        

Prerequisite: Completion of Honors Algebra II/Trigonometry with at least a “B” average.

Description: A course that provides the background needed for calculus. Topics include conic sections, functions and graphs, matrix math, vector math, exponential and logarithmic functions, and trigonometry. Emphasis is placed upon critical, analytical thinking.

Honors Calculus

Semester: 2        

Prerequisite: Completion of Honors Pre-Calculus with at least a “B” average.

Description: Calculus is an abstract system consisting of certain assumptions and their logical consequences. The assumptions at the foundation of calculus are a set of statements about real numbers. Topics in the course include functions and derivations, integration, continuity and limits, differential, applications of the derivative and differential and logarithmic and exponential functions.

Probability and Statistics                    

Grade(s): 10-12

Credit: 1

Semester: 2        

Prerequisite: Completion of Algebra II 

Description: This course is recommended as an elective for all students as an introduction to the topics of probability and statistics in preparation for various college programs and careers. In this course the student will study the notion of sequences and series, the probability of an event occurring under given conditions, and calculate and analyze experimental data.  A scientific calculator is required. A graphing calculator is recommended.
