February Celebrations!

Lutheran East has been very busy in the months since winter break.  In particular, the Fine Arts Department worked tirelessly to prepare a celebration of Black History Month.  The school assembly on Monday, February 25th featured artwork from Mrs. Nagy’s classes, a reader’s theater from drama, and songs from the Lutheran East Gospel Choir.  The artwork celebrated heroes like Ruby Bridges, Martin Luther King, Jr., Jesse Jackson, and Rosa Parks. The drama celebrated the achievements of George Washington Carver, who was much more than a man who worked with peanuts.  The choir sang songs that were inspirational and that were a reflection of both past and current struggles faced by African-Americans. The assembly served as a way to entertain, to educate, and to reflect. Students had so much to celebrate and so much to hope and dream about.

On Thursday, February 28th the Gospel Choir traveled to the historic Shiloh Baptist Church at the corner of E. 55th and Scovill.  The concert was a tremendous success in many ways. It was inspirational to be inside of a church building that was built in 1921 and that houses a congregation that dates back 169 years!!  Furthermore, Lutheran East was able to recognize African-American Pillars in the community for their participation in ministry, in broadcasting, in teaching, and in service. What a great opportunity it was!  Part of our concert made Fox 8 Morning News.

Lutheran East believes strongly in celebrating Black History Month, but not as a stand-alone concept.  We believe that the month should serve as an encouragement to spend the entire year remembering that even when struggles seem at their strongest, that our students can be successful in following their dreams:  doctors, lawyers, scientists, teachers, athletes and so much more.
